Primary 1 to 4: secure the basics
Early support should focus on reading instructions, number sense, core language skills and accurate understanding of Science concepts. Repeated practice helps only when mistakes are explained and corrected.
Primary 5 and 6: prepare without panic
Upper Primary students face broader content and more demanding application questions. A clear plan should identify weak topics, maintain current schoolwork and gradually introduce mixed and timed practice for the PSLE.
Parents should monitor workload so tuition supports school rather than leaving the child too tired to learn effectively.
Choose a tutor who can engage the child
Subject knowledge is essential, but a Primary tutor also needs patience, clear language and the ability to keep a younger student participating. Ask how the tutor handles distraction, careless errors and reluctance to attempt difficult questions.
