This is general educational guidance. Check the linked official sources and your child’s school instructions for the applicable syllabus and assessment year.
Build a simple map of the passage
After the first reading, ask who or what each paragraph is mainly about and what changes. A few margin words can capture the sequence without copying sentences.
Clarify only vocabulary that blocks the main meaning. Encourage the child to use surrounding clues before reaching for a dictionary.
Name the question type
A detail question asks for stated information; an inference question asks what the evidence suggests; a vocabulary question asks for meaning in context. Different questions require different work.
Underline the important part of the question and check whether one or more details are required.
Link inference to evidence
Ask the child to point to the clue before giving the conclusion. Then complete the sentence: ‘This suggests ___ because ___.’
The final answer may be shorter, but the spoken routine teaches that an inference must be supported rather than guessed.
Review for meaning and completeness
Check that pronouns clearly refer to the right person or object, the answer stays within the requested paragraph and every part of the question is addressed.
Use school feedback to build a personal checklist. The MOE primary curriculum includes English Language alongside other core subjects; specific school assessment formats may vary.
