Primary English and PSLE support
For younger children, explain whether the main concern is reading instructions, forming sentences, spelling or speaking confidently. A tutor can adjust the amount of reading, discussion and written work to the child’s starting point.
For PSLE English preparation, share the student’s subject level and recent marked work. Tuition can focus on comprehension, writing and language use while allowing time for listening and oral practice. The tutor should refer to the current examination format for the student’s course.
Secondary English tuition
Secondary English requires students to interpret texts and express ideas clearly, not only memorise vocabulary. Relevant support may include editing, comprehension, summary skills and planning writing for a particular purpose and audience.
Tell us the school year, examination year and subject level. Students preparing for O-Level, N-Level, SEC or an international qualification should use materials aligned with their own course. Literature in English and General Paper are different subjects; list them separately if you need those instead.
Writing and comprehension support
If writing is the concern, ask the tutor to review an actual composition. Is the difficulty generating ideas, staying on the topic, organising paragraphs or controlling sentences? The answer should guide what happens in the lesson.
For comprehension, the student can practise locating evidence, making reasonable inferences and explaining an answer precisely. After corrections, ask them to attempt a similar question independently so the lesson goes beyond copying a model response. Keep corrected writing to make recurring weaknesses easier to review.
Build confidence in spoken English
Individual lessons can give a quieter student more time to speak, organise a response and ask questions. Short discussions about school, everyday events or age-appropriate reading can help connect vocabulary with actual use.
Ask how the tutor will provide feedback on clarity, relevance and supporting ideas. For examination preparation, practise the tasks required by the current syllabus. Listening practice should also remain part of the plan where it is assessed.
Find an English tutor who fits your child
Share the student’s level, the two skills that need most attention and whether lessons should be at home or online. A recent teacher comment can be more useful than a broad request to improve English.
Compare relevant teaching experience, marking and feedback approach, availability and rate. Agree on a manageable routine between lessons: for example, reviewing corrected sentences, reading a short text and discussing a few new words in context.
