Primary 1 and Primary 2: build confidence early
Early tuition can focus on reading instructions, expressing ideas and understanding numbers. Explain whether your child needs help with schoolwork, a specific gap or the transition into primary school.
For Kindergarten 1, Kindergarten 2 or Primary 1 preparatory classes, select that level in the enquiry. Keep expectations age-appropriate and discuss a suitable lesson duration rather than using an older child’s revision programme.
Primary 3 and Primary 4: strengthen understanding
As schoolwork develops, students need to explain how they reach an answer as well as getting it right. Bring a recent assignment so the tutor can distinguish unfamiliar vocabulary, weak concepts and rushed working.
Ask for a plan that supports current school topics and revisits earlier gaps. If requesting several subjects, discuss how lesson time will be divided instead of assuming everything can be covered in one sitting.
Primary 5, Primary 6 and PSLE tuition
MOE offers English Language, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics and Science at standard or foundation levels in Primary 5 and 6, with Higher Mother Tongue available where applicable. Tell us the level for each subject rather than only the child’s year.
For PSLE preparation, identify priorities using marked work, then balance topic revision, mixed questions and timed practice. Use the current SEAB format for the student’s subjects. Tuition should fit alongside schoolwork and rest, not fill every available afternoon.
Choose support by subject
For English and Chinese, tell us whether reading, comprehension, writing or oral confidence is the concern. For Mathematics and Science, share the topics or question types that repeatedly cause difficulty.
Prepare for the first lesson
Provide the tutor with the current school topics, recent work and two or three priorities. Let the child describe what feels difficult, and agree on a small amount of practice they can manage independently.
For home tuition, choose a comfortable, low-distraction space. For online lessons, test audio and document sharing and decide whether a parent needs to help with the setup.
